Decapitated (ポーランド) はかの傑作 Organic Hallucinosis (2006) あたりから、
がっつりと深いノリのGroove Metalをやるようになっている。

デビュー当初の陰鬱なテクニカル・デスの雰囲気は払拭されてしまっているが、
どっちみち重たいデスメタルであることには変わらないし、
腹にたまるノリまで加えてくれて最高、言うことなし。

Groove Metal かつての筆頭株だった Machine Head や Chimaira の先細りが目立つ今、
ひょっとしたら Decapitated が代わりに頭角をあらわしてくれるかもしれない。
昔の純粋なデスメタル時代も好きではあるが、個人的にはここ数作の路線を貫いてほしい。

Depuis sa formation en 1996, le groupe polonais Decapitated aura connu bien des évolutions, que ce soit en terme de personnel que d'orientation musicale. Niveau personnel, il ne reste plus que le cerveau fondateur du groupe, le guitariste et compositeur Vogg. Le second plus "ancien" membre est Rasta, le troisième vocaliste du groupe depuis 2009, qui succèda à Sauron (1996-2005) et Covan (2005-2009). Niveau musical, les compositions de Vogg ont aussi évoluées. Decapitated est souvent crédité comme le groupe qui a relancé le death metal à la fin des années 90, alors que le genre semblait ne plus rien avoir à dire, en proposant un death metal très technique malgré le très jeune âge des musiciens (moyenne d'âge 14 ans !). Si ce côté technique a marqué les débuts du groupe, les trois premiers albums s'inscrivaient tout de même dans les marques traditionnelles du genre. Avec le quatrième album, Organic Hallucinosis (2006), Decapitated s'émancipait, complexifiait ses morceaux et proposait un death metal technique moderne incorporant de nombreuses influences extérieures au genre (thrash, indus, jazz).

Anticult est une nouvelle étape : le groupe s'oriente cette fois vers un groove death metal qui rappelle par certains aspects Meshuggah. C'est particulièrement notable sur les deux premiers titres, Impulse et Deathvaluation. Le troisième titre, Kill the Cult, est sans doute le morceau le plus immédiat de cet album. Posé sur une rythmique thrash rappelant les grandes heures de Sepultura, le riff central est d'une redoutable efficacité. Ce titre est un tube avec un petit côté nu-metal. One-Eyed Nation est le titre le plus ambitieux avec une structure complexe alternant les passages très lourds et rapides avec des moments plus groove. Le titre suivant Anger Line est sur la même ligne, en moins épique, et surprend avec un solo jazzy à la Meshuggah. Earth Scar reprend les modalités de Kill the Cult et l'influence Sepultura. Cette parenté est d'ailleurs marquée à travers tout l'album aussi dans le chant de Rasta, nettement moins guttural que ceux de ses prédécesseurs Sauron et Cowan. Comme Kill the Cult, c'est un titre assez dansant avec une ligne mélodique claire. Le titre Never propose une sorte de résumé de tout l'album en incorporant tous les éléments exploités précédemment. L'album se termine sur Amen, un instrumental épique, lourd, lancinant, atmosphérique à la Gojira. La chose remarquable sur cet album est que chaque morceau emmène le suivant. Il y a une cohérence interne dans la succession des titres qui solidifie l'album.

Au final, je trouve cet album absolument brillant, une sorte de monstre croisant Meshuggah et Sepultura sous le scalpel de Decapitated. Ce n'est plus du death metal, c'est du metal moderne, technique, groovy, qui sans renier ses racines death et thrash se tourne vers quelque chose de nouveau. C'est pour moi leur meilleur album, ni plus ni moins, et sans doute l'album death de l'année.

Now this is something special, a band who exploded into the Death Metal scene, breathed new life into it with two stone cold classics; Winds of Creation and Nihility and then something funny happened, they released the not too shabby Organic Hallucinoses and then seemed to sink without much of a trace, they released a few more albums but seemed to have lost something. Oddly enough their new album is a draw mainly because they seemed to realise that this something was missing and decided that instead of patching it up they would purge and become an altogether different beast.

Decapitated now sound like a cross between Lamb of God and Pantera, it’s a surprise but not in a bad way, sure it is sad we won’t see anything like ‘Nihility’ again but this new monster has its own plus points, its adrenalized groove give it a fun immediacy while retaining a nice big stomp that flattens most modern bands.

‘Impulse’ is a track which delights in its own cold fury as if this new beast has to come to terms with itself before really cutting loose and that acceptance comes with second track ‘Death Valuation’ which seems to sit more naturally in its shameless groove while a solo raises the track to greater heights, ‘Kill the Cult’ follows with a blatant earworm chorus which might make you worry about just how far in this direction they may go, ‘One-Eyed Nation’ comes along just in time to dispel any doubt that they might be on a quest for chart hits as the song opens up into a panoramic view which develops and shifts in grand style.

‘Anger Line’ pushes a more straightforward heavy thrash which rather appropriately is followed by the ferocious bark and groove of ‘Earth Scar’ which recalls a Roots era Sepultura, pretty exciting stuff. After this giant track Decapitated regress into the thrashier number ‘Never’ which defines itself with some uplifting leads, closer ‘Amen’ is an intriguing ending to a rather surprising album which hints at the possible bright future they may have.

Ich bin Decapitated-Neuling und kannte die Polen bisher nicht, muss aber sagen: Was für ein Mega-Brett!
Ein sagenhaftes Stück technischen Death-Metals mit ganz eigenem, fetten Sound und krasser, nicht bis ins unendliche verzerrte Stimme.
Hervorzuheben ist meiner Meinung nach insbesondere das Schlagzeugspiel, da es sich nicht nur um liebloses herumgeknüppel handelt, woran sich dann ein Riff nach dem nächsten reiht. Natürlich sind kleinere klassische Death-Metal-Elemente enthalten, die genau dem vorgenannten Muster entsprechen, Decapitated spielen dennoch sehr abwechslungsreich und die Kombination aus einfallsreichen Gitarrenmelodien und -spiel und dem erfrischenden, fast schon luftig klingenden Schlagzeug - ein Geniestreich für meine Ohren!
In Teilen fühle ich mich beim Hören dieser Scheibe sogar an die besten Zeiten von Lamb of God erinnert.

Aber zurück zu Decapitated: Ab dem ersten Lied kann man gar nicht anders: Irgendein Körperteil zuckt ständig mit :-)
Meine Anspieltipps: Der Opener Impulse, Kill The Kult oder Earthscar.
Das Album hält bis auf eine Ausnahme das Level vollständig hoch. Lediglich Anger Line wird dem Album meiner Meinung nach nicht in vollem Umfang gerecht. Der Titel hat ab einer Laufzeit von knapp 2 Minuten zwar auch seine Momente, die 2 Minuten bis dahin sind mir aber schlicht zu monoton, sodass der Titel tatsächlich eher einem einfachem Death-Metal-Song entspricht. Einen Titel kann ich aber verschmerzen. Und so kann ich gar nicht anders als dieser Cult-Platte mit 37 Minuten voller Nackenbrecher 5 Sterne zu geben.
