Although this novel was written in nineteen-forties, it could predict the modern world.
Nowadays, the government and big companies gather the information from people through social media. They can even control the mind of individual by advertisement.
I felt sad when I read the ending of the story. not happy end, hopeless. But, I got absorbed in reading. I always looked forward the next chapter. Very thrilling!

Nineteen Eighty-Four (Vintage Dystopia) ハードカバー – 2018/2/20
英語版
George Orwell
(著)
The year is 1984, and life in Oceania is ruled by the Party. Under the gaze of Big Brother, Winston Smith yearns for intimacy and love – “thought crimes” that, if uncovered, would mean imprisonment, or death. But Winston is not alone in his defiance, and an illicit affair will draw him into the mysterious Brotherhood and the realities of resistance.
Nineteen Eighty-Four has been described as chilling, absorbing, satirical, momentous, prophetic and terrifying. It is all these things, and more.

Hadn’t read this book since 1985 when I was in school. Deeply profound visionary's take on how the world would become. Boy was he right. We are well on our way to that kind of society.

As you well know, this is a dystopian novel, but the lothsame autocratic world can be seen in present Western worlds such as not only in Japan but also as in the Republican Party's America.
This is more serious than [Animal Farm]'s in a kind of rather humorous political allegory or irony.

This is a horror story, its all unfolding now what with the whole covid thing. Terrifying to think that we are now headed for 1984. An excellent book, highly recommended.

The thought police, appeared in this novel, could be the political correctness, now rampant in our real world. Big brother is watching you!!

IMHO, George Orwell wrote two great political novels; Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949).
Writing a critique about Britain’s social stratification and economic inequality in Animal Farm. And, the dangers of the corruption of the revolution. Whilst warning about the great existential threat of authoritarianism in the later story 1984.
In this novel, the author does an excellent job of imagining what ordinary people endure in a modern totalitarian state e.g. Soviet Russia in the past and North Korea today. The deification of the great leader.Mind control through the manipulation of culture (Hate Week), language (Newspeak) and memory (redacting history).
In a mere dictatorship, the masses are cowed by the threat of violence. In the 20th Century, total control would ensure total obedience because people would have no other point of reference. Ordinary people are turned against each other. Dissidents become fervent believers in the state.
In a world full of conflict and fear, there is the great temptation of creating an Islamist state, fundamentalist society, or super empire. One ring to rule them all!!!!

1984 still relevant today.

The year has long since passed and gone. But this book still resonates today.
One of the benchmarks in English literature, it really should be on everybody's book shelf (or kindle).
Gripping. Still contemporary. For newcomers to the book, it is easy to read and understand. A real page-turner.

“It is an excellent dystopian novel with connections to the modern day and deep themes; however, the sexual content is continuous and explicit, discussing pleasure and how naked bodies look. The main character lusts after a woman, and about halfway through the book it becomes seriously depressing.” - Common Sense Media
